I believe the insect that W.B. Yeats was referring to In this poem was in fact the Crane Fly because it is found near and on freshwater streams and have quite long legs. These are harmless fly's with mosquito like bodies.
I believe that W.B. Yeats chose this insect as the reference point in his poem because they are slow moving and slow flying insects that really capture the thought process of humans by being silent and constantly moving around just like the human mind. I think Yeats decided to use such important character in this poem such as Caesar, Michelangelo, and also hinting at the mythological Helen of troy because he wants to simplify event the most gifted and historically important down to their fundamental human actions and illustrate this action through the use of a fly.
